Writing Workshops

The WOC Writers’ Workshop® are conducted once a week in a three week cycle. We generally meet for 2 ½ hours between 6:15pm-8:45/9:00pm. The workshops are not a class or lecture but rather a safe space where participants are encouraged to write through activities and prompts.

Participants receive feedback from their fellow WOC writers about what they liked about the piece and its strengths, providing only positive feedback. This approach allows writers to break free of their inner critic and overcome mental blocks. No taboos. No limitations.

Through the AWA method, women of color can explore their writing. For those interested in receiving critiques on their writing, there is an opportunity to bring in a writing sample.

The Amherst Writers and Artists Method

WOC Writers’ Workshop® is modeled after the Amherst Writers and Artists (AWA) method founded by Pat Schneider. The AWA method encourages rather than disparages writers who may not have reached their optimal literary standing. It gives writers the space to create without judgement and work through their unique voices.

AWA Philosophy

  1. Everyone has a strong, unique voice.
  2. Everyone is born with creative genius.
  3. Writing as an art form belongs to all people, regardless of economic class or educational level.
  4. The teaching of craft can be done without damage to a writer’s original voice or artistic self-esteem.
  5. A writer is someone who writes.
